Description:

Do you think "anything goes" in Sin City? You'd be wrong. Many people think that prostitution is legal in Las Vegas... it's not. It is totally against the law. Also against the law? How about giving food to your fellow man? How about setting foot within 100 feet of a public playground? How about smoking in any restaurant that is not part of a large casino? Song is "Piano and Trio in D#" by Jon Lyle Smith from his Horizons album http://www.zebox.com/jlsmith/music/

No - I completely agree. It lacks basic common sense to outlaw a personally chosen charitable act for whatever reason. And even if the children's playground is unusable for adults for size and safety reasons, liberty means freedom to travel and the state has no right to tell you not to visit public areas. It contravenes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to do so. Your tax dollars pay for this play park!

I'm a pretty staunch libertarian. Like I said previously, I think you're right. I merely have a few small trepidations. I think that the longer a civilization remains stable, it becomes inevitable that social hierarchies form. These social structures will lock people into restrictive options for them and their children. I worry about the long term implications of economic slavery.

Sex slavery is one thing. I don't think that's what you're talking about though, I think you're talking about women who have no other option. If you told those women that prostitution is illegal and they weren't allowed to do it, do you think they'd still do it? It's exactly the same in America. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean women don't do it. But if it were legal in America, they'd at least get more protection about it. Imagine a women's prostitution union.

You raise an interesting argument. I still waffle on this subject somewhat. I think you're right... but what about places like Thailand where women are unwillingly locked into that career?

I know this isn't the main part of your video, but I think prostitution should be legal everywhere. I wouldn't use brothels, but I think that it's a human right to use your body how you want to. This goes for all sorts of other issues too that involve the infringement of people's rights. GR - Fellow Libertarian.

Well, the short answer is that, historically speaking, all mannor of wierd things have become legal out there in them parts..... maybe that is why so many are flocking to build out that way...

I'm really beginning to think that a truly functional democracy will only work if the people are educated enough to see the problems as they truly are not as the sensationalized headlines make them out to be. Policy and peoples perceptions are warped by the current news media, I think some other form of journalism/fact distribution method is needed. I'd say the free market approach to news has a lot to answer for with regard to our current problems.

I'm with you on this subject, nanny-state laws generally don't sit well with me, particularly when they harm the people least able to help themselves. The playground thing strikes me as particularly pointless since most child abuse is perpetrated by the family or close friends. If they really wanted to help kids out they'd better serve them by investing in programs to teach teachers to identify signs of abuse.

Even if you have "complete follow-through"... we're still talking about discrimination on public land, based solely on income. Personally, I think things like the issue in Vegas will inevitably cause neighborhood public parks to eventually disappear... to be replaced by parks owned by non-profits, foundations, associations, etc. This way the parks are no longer public and may discriminate as they see fit.
