Description:

Part 5. 2/3 of the way through, you'll get an insight in to how 'Torn Curtain' might have turned out, had Hitchcock not fired him from the project - a dramatic piece during Gromek's murder. Trivia: Scorsese also used a portion of that piece for his '92 remake of 'Cape Fear' - right near the end, when the boat is caught in the violent storm.

The clip of Gromek's murder with Herrmann's music says it all—pity we don't have the scene at full length. It was the greatest of all director-composer collaborations, while it lasted. By the way, "the French guy" in the opening sequence is the director Claude Chabrol, dork.

That French guy goes a bit over his head in explaining just why the music in the shower scene is so terrifying. Oh well, that's French for you...

It was an apt description though - comparing the violins to shrieking birds. I never thought about it before, but it is giving a clue to the killer's identity.

Yes, but I think he's on the wrong track in thinking that it's the real, "subliminal" reason for finding the scene (or the music) scary. That's a bit like putting the horse before the carriage.

I agree with Raksin - Hitchcock did treat Herrmann badly, and after ten years of fruitful collaboration, he deserved more respect. Hitchcock's work, since then, didn't stand up to much. And Ron Goodwin's score for 'Frenzy', was a blatant rip-off of Herrmann's style.

Oh my Herrmann being treated badly? lol after being so arrogant and irascible all his life maybe he had it coming, I love the score for Frenzy. Goodwin did a great job and so did John Williams in Family Plot, two great films. Waxman, Tiomkin and Rozsa all worked for Hitchcock, Herrmann was not the only great composer who collaborated with the master.

What are you talking about? Herrmann was no more arrogant than he should have been. He was a human being you know.

and Herrmann didn't create the sound effects for The Birds, he was just a sound consultant. The effects were created by Oskar Sala and Remi Gassmann.
