I agree - I am practicing this kata now for my next kyu, and it proves "simple" can be awfully hard (especially when you need to be fairly exacting to pass)!

I like it, it's SS (Sweet and simple).

We get so caught up in the flashy movements these days of the nunchaku (like Bruce Lee and Michelangelo of the Ninja Turtles use) that we in large forget about the practical use of the weapon. Thank you for this video of real Kobujutsu nunchaku kata.

This is kobudo - we don't do bare-hand unless our class is combined with karate classes in a practice. Bunkai translates to analysis - if you look at my other videos you can find bunkai for entire kata as well as hojo-undo. Ours is Okinawan-style training, but hojo-undo were added only recently to allow step-by-step learning instead of having students try to copy the entire kata as demonstrated by their sempai

Okee. So there is a build up in training. What kind of bunkai do you do? since bunkai only means short piece, I don't know what you mean. Perhaps we are doing a similar thing and give it different names. Although we start with barehand kumite.

We do bunkai, too, but only after learning the basic technique individually.

That's nice, but trust me it is different from having a life opponent. Everyone moves differently and opponents do unexpected things. Besides, with a live partner you get training in 'Ma-ai'.

Yes, his vision is directed towards his imaginary opponent's jinshu, upper lip beneath the nose. I prefer to practice facing our dojo's mirror so I can use myself as the opponent (I guess that is considered a buddhist mentality).

I can see what you mean in the movements of the instructor. His eyes show.

Would the hojo-undo be considered less formal than the kata? We spend most of our time on the hojo-undo in the beginning, but we are always trying to visualize where the opponent stands and how he/she is attacking - bunkai gets this in more concrete form with attacker-defender pairing, but that will be after we get more secure with the kata.
