I agree there too, look at communism-not a religion, but another dogmatic excuse to kill and oppress

we need it, but in a different way. more like a benign spirituality, kind of like Buddhism and humanism. it needs to be totally modernized, and the dogma taken out. people should be free to question, and no religion should claim to have all the answers b/c that impossible

Sure we need a religion! How otherwise would I keep the 8-12 year-old children working in my factory for 8cents per day if they hadn't fear of the almighty God who would punish them for rebelling against me? We don't need religion any more then we need slavery.

thankyou, I will endeavor to watch it, Do we need religion? No, we need community, compassion, education and inspiration which we can find anywhere if we are willing to look.

I think systems of morality and philosophies of ethics are necessary, but they don't require supernatural belief. So no, we don't need religion, but we do need moral training.

That's not Texas slang. In Texas we say "y'all" or "you all". Texans don't use the word "guys" very much. That's New Yorker talk. Brooklyn "youse guys" is the standard.

lol... I guess it's more common in the Dallas area, since there are so many people from various places running around here. Fortunately, though, I only know one person who frequently uses "youse guys". Of course, Texas is the only place I know of where you can have a full-on debate about where the apostrophe belongs in the word "y'all." Try to keep dry this week, OK?

I grew up in Fort Worth and Fort Worthers think Dallasites might as well be New Yorkers. Fort Worthers are tougher on Dallasites than atheists are on Christians. LOL.

Well I'm an Agnostic but probably closer to an Atheist than anything over the years. I think that even as an Atheist I would still think that religion if better having it. Over time I believe it will slowly start to go away because the younger generations are not following it as much...

...I think easing out of it slowly won't cause any problems because it will slowly be left behind. Now before anybody comments to me that that's a shitty thing to say. This is my opinion of what I believe might happen in the far future. We need to look at the logistics of what we see now. 1000 years ago religion ruled the world, we see a difference now?...

...If religion was taken from us completely in an instant, this world would be insanity. Right now, I think it is needed and the world is better off with. It's giving people hope in their lives and faith is important. Being Agnostic, I'd like it to stick around because I still want to know more about both sides.

I think the people who try to put forward religion as beneficial tend to confuse religion with spirituality. And when I say 'spirituality' I don't mean anything supernatural or magical--I'm referring to our natural tendency to speculate about the ultimate nature of things, the meaning of life, etc., as well as practices such as meditation and community gatherings. Of course contemplating the deeper meaning of your life (either alone or with others) is a good thing, but there's no reason you...

...need a religion in order to do this. As long as religion continues to be about doctrine, it will be doing more harm than good and I really think we'd be better off without it. I could envision religion eventually being replaced with something like religion, but without requiring you to subscribe to any particular creed as the "gospel truth". That's the real root of the problem I think: The religious idea that truth can (or should) be captured once for all time in some written document.

Religion generates a great deal of unnecessary (sp?) conflict over subjects that are not valid (unless seen as the fiction it is) to begin with, like the inconsitencies of Christian, Muslim, etc. scripture. If kids were not indoctrinated with it from a young age the need for and weight of it wouldnt be "neccesary". I find it tragic that the larger part of our population cant use the only evol. weapon and tool we have; our minds.

Pretty arrogant of you to think that you are the only one using your mind.
