I've gone back to a 1kg (2.2lb) weight now. The secret is to hold it horizonatally with the camera and weight attached to find the "balance point" - and that's where you hold the camera. You just have a couple of fingers on the arm to stop it swivling sideways.

The problem with my steadycam is not too much weight, it's that it's top heavy due to the location of the arm. The arm of the steadycam should be closer to the topso that the camera "teetering and tottering" will be reduced. The weight needs to be just enough to pull the mechanism straight down and give you control at the same time.

Nice work. I made something similar last Summer out of iron plumbing pipe. More difficult drilling, but the total mass made for smoother walking. I think I might take another shot at PVC, seeing how well yours turned out.

I was shooting with it yesterday for hours with the 2 kilo weight. I had tried it with 5 kg but it didn't seem to make any difference but obviously was a lot more tiring to hold. I've yet to see the results on the computer. Uploading today and I'll post something soon.

When i use my steadicam gadget it weighs about that, 5 for the cmaera and 5 for the weight. The weight helps to dampen out vibrations and if you hold it with two hands it dosnt swing or pitch. Look at the vid on my profile....

10kg - yeah right. The 1kg makes the arm ache as it is.
